Weather warnings have been issued across large parts of Andalucia as temperatures are forecast to soar as high as 43C over the next two days – while localised storms threaten hail and ‘strong gusts of wind’.

State weather agency Aemet has activated a string of yellow and orange alerts for Wednesday and Thursday across six of the region’s eight provinces.

The heat is expected to intensify significantly on September 3 in what is being branded a ‘weather event.’

On Wednesday, the most serious warning in Andalucia is an orange alert in much of Sevilla province and Cordoba, where temperatures could reach 40C between 1pm and 9pm.

Yellow heat warnings will also be in force across several other parts of the region.

The Campiña gaditana in Cadiz is forecast to reach 38C, while the Litoral de Huelva could see highs of 36C.

Granada will face a different weather threat on Wednesday. Aemet has issued yellow warnings for rain and thunderstorms in Guadix and Baza from 2pm until 8pm.

Up to 15mm of rain could fall within a single hour, while thunderstorms could be accompanied by hail and very strong gusts of wind.

However, the heat is forecast to become even more intense on Thursday, September 3, when orange warnings spread across swathes of inland Andalucia.

Temperatures could reach a scorching 42C in the Campiña cordobesa, the Campiña sevillana and the Guadalquivir Valley in Jaen.

All three areas will be under orange alerts between 1pm and 9pm.

The Andevalo and Condado area of Huelva is also placed under an orange warning, with maximum temperatures of 40C expected.

Elsewhere, yellow warnings include highs of 39C in inland Cadiz and Cuenca del Genil, while Guadix and Baza could reach 38C.

The alerts mean some of Andalucia’s hottest inland areas are facing temperatures above 40C despite the arrival of September.

No alerts have been issued for the Costa del Sol region at the time of publishing.
