Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has declared himself a ‘proud lefty’ in a bid to reclaim the term in the run up to the snap general election.
The PSOE leader shared a video on social media speaking to camera, listing all the things that make him a ‘zurdo’ – the Spanish term for ‘lefty’.
He suggested it should not be ‘offensive’ to be labelled a lefty if it means standing up for abortion rights, saying no to war and raising the national minimum wage, among other things.
He said: ‘To those who think it’s an insult to call someone a lefty, let me tell you something.
‘If raising pensions makes me a lefty, then I’m a lefty.
‘If giving mothers and fathers more time to enjoy with their children is ‘lefty’, then again, I’m a lefty.
‘If raising the professional minimum wage every year is lefty, then I am lefty.
‘If defending the right for women to have an abortion is lefty, then I’m a lefty.
‘If saying ‘no’ to war and ‘yes’ to peace is lefty, then I’m a lefty. So yes, I’m a lefty, and proud of it.’
The campaign is being pushed out by PSOE leaders across the country, who are uploading similar videos.
Spaniards will go to the polls on November 29.
