Pedro Sanchez has confirmed that towns hit by Storm Adam will be formally declared as disaster zones.
The prime minister made the announcement during a visit to the emergency command post in Oliva on Tuesday, following torrential rain that left three people dead in the Valencia region.
He met emergency coordinators and mayors from affected towns before addressing the media.
Valencian president Juanfran Perez Llorca accompanied him, alongside ministers Sara Aagesen, Fernando Grande-Marlaska and Diana Morant.
Some flooded areas remain inaccessible
The central government’s representative in the region, Pilar Bernabe, said some coastal communities remained inaccessible on Tuesday.
Emergency crews were focusing on pumping water out of flooded areas.
Bernabe told Cadena SER that no new rescue requests had been received since Monday, although some residents remained on upper floors of their homes.
Change in government representative
Her visit also coincided with her departure as the central government’s regional representative to stand in the November 29 general election.
Roger Llanes is set to replace her.
Bernabe said she was stepping forward to oppose the far right and defend democracy, while maintaining that her eventual ambition was to become mayor of Valencia.
