The conservative Partido Popular (PP) is negotiating with Vox over an electoral agreement aimed at securing a Senate majority in the November 29 general election, it has emerged.
PP leader Alberto Nuñez Feijoo confirmed the talks during an interview with COPE radio on Tuesday.
‘It would be a mistake to hand control to Sanchismo,’ he said, referring to the political bloc led by incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
Feijoo declined to disclose the proposals under discussion, saying both parties had agreed to conduct negotiations discreetly and respectfully.
‘They know how far we can go and that we have a sense of responsibility towards the state,’ he said.
His comments followed remarks on Monday by Vox leader Santiago Abascal, who expressed willingness to reach an ‘understanding’ over the upper chamber.
Abascal argued that cooperation between left-wing parties required ‘sacrifices’ from the opposition.
The PSOE and Frente Amplio have also agreed to stand together for the Senate, seeking to prevent the PP and Vox from controlling the chamber.
