A man who set fire to a bar after being refused mayonnaise for his sandwich has accepted a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
The defendant admitted deliberately starting the blaze at Las Postas in Los Palacios, Sevilla, under an agreement that reduced the 11-year sentence originally sought by prosecutors.
He also accepted an order banning him from coming within 500 metres of the bar for 10 years.
The court heard how the man went to a nearby petrol station and obtained a plastic bottle filled with petrol before returning to the premises.
After arguing with one of the owners, he poured the fuel over the counter and ignited it with a lighter. Gas cylinders and bottles of alcohol were stored around the counter area.
When questioned by prosecutors, he confirmed he had started the fire intentionally.
The damage was assessed at €9,093.17, which had been paid in compensation before the trial. His defence also agreed to an additional payment sought by the private prosecution.
For two minor criminal damage offences, he accepted a €180 fine and compensation payments of €72 to each of the two victims.
The Sevilla Provincial Court did not formally deliver its judgment at the hearing because of administrative issues linked to court reforms, El Correo reported. A written ruling is expected to reflect the agreed penalties.
The defendant has been held on remand since the incident. Time already spent in custody will count towards his prison sentence.
