The Junta de Andalucia has issued a health advisory after it was confirmed that smoke from the major fires in central Spain are drifting towards the southernmost region.
Emergencies minister Antonio Sanz today said several reports had been made from residents in Jaen and Cordoba who believed new fires had broken out after noticing smoke in the sky.
Officials stressed there are no active wildfires in Andalucia responsible for the smoke and urged people not to be alarmed.
‘That is not the case,’ he said. ‘There were no fires here causing the situation. The smoke was coming from the major wildfires in Madrid and Toledo, even though it may seem surprising.’
Sanz said the regional government had already launched an information campaign to advise people on how to reduce the health risks associated with smoke exposure, particularly respiratory problems.
Although Sunday’s reports were concentrated in Jaen and Cordoba, he said the campaign has now been extended across the whole of Andalucia because the fires in central Spain have been so intense.
According to 112 Andalucia, the presence of smoke in the atmosphere does not pose a direct risk to the general population, but it may cause discomfort, particularly for vulnerable groups.

These include people with respiratory illnesses, older adults, young children and allergy sufferers.
Health advice
Emergency officials recommend:
- Keeping doors and windows closed if smoke becomes noticeable.
- Avoiding prolonged outdoor exercise while smoke remains in the area.
- Paying particular attention to anyone with asthma, respiratory conditions or allergies.
- Seeking medical advice if symptoms develop or existing conditions worsen.
- Following updates only through official channels.
The regional emergency service said it is continuing to monitor the situation and will issue further advice if conditions change.
