A €46.2million aid package has been announced to repair damage caused by the series of earthquakes that rocked Granada in August.
Andalucia president Juanma Moreno unveiled the wide-ranging programme following a meeting with Granada mayor Marifran Carazo.
The money will be used to repair homes, municipal infrastructure, schools, healthcare facilities, judicial buildings and cultural heritage damaged during the succession of tremors.
The Alhambra itself will receive €4million for work to stabilise and consolidate elements in several areas of the monumental complex.
The package was approved by the Junta de Andalucia’s governing council on Tuesday.
€8million for damaged homes
Among the measures is €8million to make damaged residential buildings safe.
The funding will cover eligible apartment blocks and individual homes where repairs are not covered by Spain’s Insurance Compensation Consortium or the central government, according to Moreno.
Another major chunk of the money will be directed towards Granada city’s Santa Adela neighbourhood.
At the request of the city council, the Junta will launch the fourth phase of the area’s urban regeneration programme.
Some €15million will be provided through Andalucia’s new Housing Plan for work affecting 12 buildings containing 150 homes.
Some of the existing properties will be replaced entirely with newly constructed homes.
€7million for worst-hit towns
A further €7million will be made available to councils in the municipalities hardest hit by the earthquakes to repair damaged local infrastructure.
Those measures are already being activated following their publication in the Junta de Andalucia’s official gazette.
The package follows a succession of earthquakes felt across the metropolitan area.
The seismic episode included a magnitude 4.6 earthquake near Alhendin, followed by further tremors across the area.
In Las Gabias, around 600 residents were evacuated from six apartment blocks containing 371 homes amid concerns over damage following the earthquakes.
