Spain has increased the Ingreso Minimo Vital (IMV) to a maximum of almost €1,800 per month – but who can qualify for the benefit?

The ‘Minimum Living Income’ is designed for the most vulnerable families and is administered by the National Social Security Institute (INSS).

Payments were increased substantially this year, with the government applying an 11.4% rise for 2026.

But unlike some benefits, the IMV is not simply a fixed monthly payment.

Social Security establishes a guaranteed income according to the size and circumstances of a household.

The benefit generally makes up the difference between that threshold and the household’s existing eligible income.

How much is the IMV in 2026?

For a single adult, the guaranteed income in 2026 is €733.60 per month, or €8,803.20 per year.

These figures represent the guaranteed income threshold, rather than necessarily the amount deposited into a claimant’s bank account.

For example, if a household’s applicable guaranteed income were €1,393.84 but it already had €600 per month in income that counted towards the calculation, the IMV would generally be used to bridge the gap, subject to the scheme’s rules.

Single-parent families can receive more

There are higher guaranteed-income thresholds for single-parent households.

In 2026, a single parent with one child has a threshold of €1,115.07 per month, rising to €1,335.15 with two children and €1,555.23 with three.

A single parent with four or more children can reach €1,775.31 per month.

There are also additional provisions for households affected by certain severe disabilities or dependency.

Families with children may furthermore qualify for the Childhood Assistance Supplement (Complemento de Ayuda para la Infancia or CAPI), which operates alongside the IMV and has broader income limits than the main benefit.

Who can claim it?

Eligibility depends on several factors, with income and assets among the most important.

Applicants generally need to demonstrate legal and effective residence in Spain and satisfy rules concerning their age, household circumstances and economic vulnerability.

Foreign residents can also qualify as Spanish nationality is not a requirement.

The key immigration requirement is generally that the applicant has been legally and effectively resident in Spain continuously for at least the year immediately before applying.

Crucially, Social Security looks at the income and net assets of the household as a whole, rather than simply whether an individual claimant is unemployed.

There are therefore limits on how much applicants can earn and own.

For a single person, for example, the 2026 asset threshold is €26,409.60, excluding their habitual residence. Different limits apply according to the composition of larger households.

This means owning the home you live in does not automatically prevent you from qualifying.

Almost 2.7 million people receiving support

The IMV has expanded significantly since it was introduced six years ago.

The latest government figures, published this month and covering July 2026, show it was supporting 879,225 households containing 2,682,646 people.

More than two-thirds of recipient households included children, while children and teenagers accounted for almost 41% of all beneficiaries.

That is considerably higher than the figures quoted in the original January article, when around 800,000 households were receiving the benefit.
