Parts of Almeria are under the highest level of heat alert today, with temperatures forecast to reach the mid 40s.
According to state weather agency Aemet, a red warning (‘extraordinary danger’) is in force across Valle del Almanzora y Los Velez in Almeria province from until 8.59pm on Friday.
The area is expected to see highs of 44C, with health officials urging residents and visitors to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated and check on vulnerable people.
Elsewhere, orange heat warnings remain in place across large parts of eastern Andalucia and neighbouring Murcia, while yellow alerts cover other areas where temperatures are also expected to climb well above 35C.
The Costa del Sol is also under an orange heat warning, with Aemet forecasting temperatures of 41C, although some inland parts of the Sol and Guadalhorce area could locally reach 42C.
The alert is in force from 11am until 8.59pm on Friday and covers much of inland Malaga province, including areas close to Marbella, Coin and the Guadalhorce Valley.
The warning comes as Spain continues to endure another spell of extreme summer heat, with authorities reminding people to take precautions against heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Motorists are also being urged to avoid leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles, even for a short period, as temperatures inside cars can rise to dangerous levels within minutes.
