A foreign driver accused of mowing down a 31-year-old motorcyclist in Marbella before fleeing the scene has been remanded in custody without bail.
According to court documents, the suspect was driving a Belgian-plated, high-end BMW when he struck the young council worker in the early hours of Monday morning.
He was arrested just hours later and tested positive for drugs, police said.
On Wednesday, Marbella’s Investigating Court No. 5 ordered the man to be held in pre-trial detention while the investigation continues.
He is being investigated for negligent homicide, driving under the influence of drugs and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
According to the High Court of Justice of Andalucia (TSJA), a judge agreed to his remand because the suspect is a foreign national with no known fixed address or ties to Spain, raising concerns he could flee.
The court said the man answered questions put to him during Wednesday’s hearing and gave his version of events in his defence.
Responsibility for the investigation will now pass to Investigating Court No. 4 in Marbella.
The suspect was allegedly driving a grey BMW with Belgian number plates when the collision occurred at around 6.45am near the Lomas de Rio Verde urbanisation on Marbella’s Golden Mile.
Emergency services received several calls reporting that a motorcycle and a car had collided, with witnesses saying the rider had been thrown to the ground after suffering a heavy impact.
The victim, who worked for Marbella Town Hall, was travelling to work as he did every morning when the crash happened. Despite emergency efforts, he died at the scene.
