This is the moment a column of black smoke towered over Benidorm after a wildfire broke out behind a nightclub in the holiday resort.
Homes are being evacuated ‘as a precaution’ after the blaze took hold in a small field behind club Tropical, on Avenida Comunidad Valenciana.
The inferno, which started at around 5pm, has prompted a major multi-agency response.
In an update issued shortly after the fire began, Benidorm Local Police confirmed that several homes were being evacuated while emergency crews continue working to contain the flames.
Police also revealed that officers have rescued a dog and several birds, adding that no injuries have been reported so far.
Shortly before 7pm, Alicante firefighters said the battle against the flames was ‘progressing favourably.’
Authorities have urged residents and visitors to avoid the area, keep access routes clear for emergency vehicles and rely only on official information as the situation develops.
The fire comes amid the devastating wildfire in Los Gallardos, Almeria, which has claimed 12 lives and burned over 6,600 hectares.
Tourists have been sharing videos of the fire taken from their hotel windows.
One Brit wrote: ‘Benidorm is on fire as we speak!’, alongside a clip showing the city’s iconic skyscrapers against a backdrop of black and grey smoke.
