A man has been arrested in Mijas on suspicion of attempted sexual assault after a woman fought him off by smashing a bottle over his head.
The incident unfolded in the early hours of the morning near Calle Jacaranda, when a concerned resident alerted emergency services after hearing loud bangs and a woman screaming for help, reports Diario Sur.
The Guardia Civil rushed to the scene and were met by a woman running in distress.
She told officers that a man she had been drinking with earlier had taken her into a nearby premises and refused to let her leave, allegedly attempting to sexually assault her.
According to initial findings, the pair had met that same night and had both been drinking. The suspect is believed to have bought the woman several drinks before allegedly trying to force himself on her.
When she resisted, the situation escalated.
The victim later told officers that, fearing she was about to be attacked, she grabbed a bottle and struck the man over the head, causing a bleeding injury and allowing her to escape.
Emergency services, including paramedics and the regional women’s support hotline, were also dispatched following the 112 call.
Officers located the suspect nearby and arrested him on suspicion of attempted sexual assault.
Sources say he had been heavily intoxicated and allegedly tried to justify his actions by claiming he had bought the woman drinks earlier that night.
Both the victim and the suspect are understood to be foreign nationals, although their nationalities have not been revealed.
The investigation remains ongoing.
