Pharmacies in Andalucia will soon be able to renew prescriptions for chronic conditions

The measure is thanks to a new system that will let pharmacists request medication refills directly from doctors.

Residents in Andalucia who suffer from chronic conditions will soon be able to renew their prescriptions without booking an appointment with their GP.

The measure is thanks to a new system that will let pharmacists request medication refills directly from doctors.

The initiative was announced on Sunday by the regional minister for Health Antonio Sanz, during an event in Sevilla marking the feast of the Immaculate Conception, patron of pharmacists.

Sanz said that before the end of the year the Junta will launch a pilot programme creating a direct communication channel between prescribers and pharmacies.

According to the minister, the new system will be installed in all Andalucian pharmacies at the start of 2026.

By March next year, pharmacists will be able to request repeat prescriptions for chronic patients without the patient needing to contact their surgery or visit a health centre.

A final phase will arrive in the second quarter of 2026, allowing pharmacies outside Andalucia to communicate with doctors from the Andalucian Health Service (SAS).

Sanz described the development as ‘good news’ that will improve healthcare access and again highlighted the role of community pharmacists as ‘strategic allies’ of the public health system.
