A man died in a busy Sevilla street on Thursday after taking a knife from a fishmonger’s and inflicting fatal injuries on himself.
The incident happened at around midday on Calle Luis Montoto, prompting a major police and ambulance response and the closure of the road.
According to witnesses quoted by Diario de Sevilla, the man had first entered a nearby bar and asked staff for a knife while expressing an intention to harm himself.
Staff refused and asked him to leave. He then entered a nearby fish shop, where he allegedly took a large knife and began injuring himself before moving into the street.
Witnesses called police, while a worker from a nearby medical centre attempted to disarm him. A passing Guardia Civil patrol also stopped to intervene.
The man collapsed in the road, where emergency teams tried to save him, but he died at the scene.
One witness described hearing the fish shop workers screaming and said she was still shaking afterwards.
Screens were erected around the scene to protect the man’s privacy, and judicial officials attended to examine the circumstances and authorise the removal of his body.
The investigation continues.
