This is the moment torrential rain and storms sparked localised flooding across parts of Murcia on Thursday.

Footage shared online shows streets inundated with muddy water as cars struggled to drive on flooded roads.

An orange weather alert had been issued by state weather agency Aemet, warning of intense rainfall.

Murcia city convened its Emergency Committee, while Cartagena and Molina de Segura activated their respective emergency protocols.

Outdoor events have been cancelled and residents in areas vulnerable to flooding have been warned to take precautions.

Authorities are urging people to avoid unnecessary journeys and stay away from flood-prone roads and waterways.

The orange warning is due to remain in place until midnight on Wednesday.

Events cancelled in Murcia

Murcia City Council convened its Emergency Committee to monitor the forecast and coordinate its response to any incidents caused by the storms.

As a precaution, several activities forming part of the city’s September Feria have been suspended, including Un rio de Cine, Ludoferia and Sacame a bailar.

Civil Protection, firefighters and Local Police have been placed on standby and are coordinating with municipal departments including parks and gardens and street cleaning.

Mayor Rebeca Perez urged residents to remain informed through official channels and follow instructions issued by the emergency services.

Authorities will continue assessing conditions throughout the day, with further changes to events or municipal services possible depending on how the weather develops.

Cartagena activates emergency plan

In Cartagena, the Municipal Emergency Plan has been activated at level zero from 2pm until midnight because of the orange warning for rain and storms.

All council-run outdoor activities have been suspended during that period, including sporting events.

Surveillance has also been stepped up in neighbourhoods, outlying districts and areas considered particularly vulnerable to flooding.

Local Police, firefighters and Civil Protection teams have been placed on alert.

Mayor Noelia Arroyo urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and warned residents never to attempt to cross ramblas – normally dry channels which can rapidly become raging torrents during intense rainfall – or any flooded roads and watercourses.

Residents in flood zones warned

Molina de Segura has meanwhile activated its Municipal Pre-Emergency Plan from 2pm.

Council events have been suspended, along with activities at sports facilities, libraries and exhibition halls.

Events scheduled for Plaza de la Constitucion and Plaza de España are currently being maintained, although that could change following the next update from Spanish weather agency Aemet.

Local Police and Civil Protection have reinforced their operations and residents living in flood-risk areas have been directly warned.

Authorities are urging people to avoid ramblas, streets where water has begun accumulating and the old N-301 road.

Drivers have also been warned not to leave vehicles parked in areas susceptible to flooding while the severe-weather alert remains in force.
