World Cup hero Ferran Torres has sparked an international row after celebrating his side’s victory wearing a cap emblazoned with the slogan ‘Make Spain Great Again’.
The Barcelona striker, who scored the winning goal against Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final, wore the hat during the national team’s open-top bus parade through Madrid.
The slogan is a clear nod to US President Donald Trump’s famous campaign motto, ‘Make America Great Again’, and even caught the attention of American media.
US broadcaster Fox News shared footage from Torres’ Instagram Stories showing the forward celebrating with fans while wearing the cap.
Shortly afterwards, the official White House X account reposted the clip, writing: ‘Everyone wants in on the movement.’
The post rapidly spread online, with thousands of users debating whether Torres was making a political statement or simply wearing the cap as a tongue-in-cheek celebration of Spain’s World Cup triumph.
Trump was present at the World Cup final in New York and later joined Spain’s players during the trophy presentation, posing with the squad as they lifted the World Cup after defeating Argentina.
Neither Torres nor the Spanish Football Federation has commented on the reaction to the cap.
