The Vithas Xanit Medical Centre in Fuengirola has expanded its healthcare services with the launch of a new rheumatology unit.
The department is aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis, osteoporosis and other chronic inflammatory diseases.
The specialist service will focus on conditions affecting the joints, spine, muscles and connective tissue, with doctors stressing that early diagnosis can dramatically improve long-term outcomes for patients.
The new clinic will treat a wide range of conditions, from common degenerative illnesses such as osteoarthritis and osteoporosis to autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthritis and lupus.
Consultant rheumatologist Dr Juan Pablo Baldivieso said many rheumatic diseases do not present solely with joint pain, making a comprehensive assessment essential to reach an accurate diagnosis.
Early diagnosis is key
One of the unit’s main aims is to identify chronic inflammatory diseases as early as possible, allowing treatment to begin before irreversible damage occurs.
According to Dr Baldivieso, early intervention can slow disease progression, reduce structural damage and significantly improve patients’ quality of life.
He also highlighted osteoporosis as a condition that often develops without symptoms, recommending preventative screening for people with known risk factors.
The clinic will also offer access to the latest biological drugs and targeted therapies, which act more precisely on the immune system and have transformed the treatment of many inflammatory conditions.
The new service forms part of Vithas Xanit Fuengirola’s ongoing expansion of specialist healthcare on the Costa del Sol.
