An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale struck the Costa del Sol in the early hours of Friday morning, it has emerged.
According to Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN), the tremor was recorded at 2.19am local time with its epicentre located west of Fuengirola, at a depth of 50km beneath the seabed.
The quake occurred between Fuengirola and Marbella, in one of Spain’s most seismically active regions, where the African and Eurasian tectonic plates meet beneath the Alboran Sea.
There were no reports of injuries or damage.
Earthquakes of this magnitude are often felt by residents, particularly in high-rise buildings, but rarely cause structural damage.
The Costa del Sol experiences regular low to moderate seismic activity due to its proximity to the Alboran Fault system.
In recent years, hundreds of tremors have been felt across Malaga province, although most have passed without incident.
