A 56-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly trying to set fire to the sunbed area of a popular beach bar in Torre del Mar.
The suspect was detained by Local Police on Monday afternoon following the incident at the La Sirena chiringuito.
Police are now investigating whether the alleged arson attempt could be linked to other recent fires in the town.
According to authorities, officers intervened quickly and prevented the fire from spreading, avoiding what could have become a much more serious incident.
The area is one of the Costa del Sol’s busiest beachfront spots during the height of the summer season.
The man was arrested at the scene and later handed over to the relevant judicial authorities.
Mayor Jesus Lupiañez praised the Local Police for their ‘professionalism, efficiency and rapid response’, saying their swift intervention prevented a potentially dangerous fire in an area packed with visitors at this time of year.
The town hall said it will continue strengthening preventive patrols and coordination between the Local Police and other security forces as the investigation continues.
It has also urged residents, business owners and tourists to report any suspicious behaviour immediately to the emergency services or police to help prevent further incidents.
