Benalmadena Town Hall has warned people against lighting illegal campfires on Calamorro mountain.

It comes after small fire pits were discovered on the beauty spot, despite Andalucia being in the middle of high wildfire season.

The council shared photographs showing the fire pits surrounded by stones, saying the incidents are already being investigated and those responsible could face serious fines.

Calamorro, home to the town’s famous cable car and a popular hiking destination, attracts hundreds of visitors every day and is known for its rich wildlife and panoramic views across the Costa del Sol.

‘If we have something unique that belongs to all the people of Benalmadena, then we all have a responsibility to protect it,’ the council said.

Officials reminded the public that from June 1 until October 15 it is strictly forbidden to light fires in forest areas, even in designated barbecue zones.

The seasonal restrictions also prohibit driving motor vehicles through forested areas without authorisation, camping and discarding cigarette ends.

The warning comes as Andalucia is suffering one of its deadliest wildfires in recent history in Almeria, where at least 12 people have died and many more remain unaccounted for.

Authorities urged residents and visitors to exercise ‘maximum caution’ and report any suspicious or irresponsible behaviour that could increase the risk of a wildfire.

‘We ask the entire population to take the utmost precautions against the risk of fires and to collaborate by reporting any irregular behaviour,’ the statement added.
