The Costa del Sol will remain under extreme heat warnings on Friday, it has been announced.
It comes after state weather agency Aemet extended yellow alerts across the coast and the Axarquia.
The warnings will be in force from 1pm until 8.59pm on July 10, covering the Western Costa del Sol and Guadalhorce Valley, where temperatures are expected to reach 37C, as well as the Axarquia, where highs of 36C are forecast.
The extension comes despite Spain’s second official heatwave coming to an end, with temperatures remaining well above normal for early July across southern Spain.
The alerts coincide with heightened wildfire concerns after a major blaze broke out between Estepona and Benahavis on Thursday, prompting evacuations and the closure of part of the AP-7 motorway.
Health authorities continue to urge residents and tourists to avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, stay well hydrated and take extra care if working or exercising outdoors.
Although temperatures are expected to ease slightly over the weekend, forecasters have warned that another powerful heat dome could develop over Spain next week, potentially bringing a fresh spell of extreme heat to large parts of the country.
It follows two heatstroke deaths in Sevilla this week, which saw a Russian woman and another foreign national both die suddenly in the street.
