Prosecutors have demanded the stepson of Marbella mayor Angeles Muñoz be jailed as soon as possible after he was sentenced to nine years in prison for his role in a Swedish-run drug trafficking operation.

The request was made by the Anti-Drug Prosecutor’s Office, who said they feared he was a potential flight risk.

Joakim Broberg was sentenced last week by the National Court of Spain after being convicted of drug trafficking and money laundering offences.

According to prosecutors, Broberg and four other convicted defendants should be remanded in custody while their convictions are not yet final.

As well as the nine-year prison sentence, Broberg was ordered to pay a €4.9million fine.

The National Court convicted 21 of the 24 defendants tried in the case, which centred on interconnected criminal groups accused of trafficking marijuana and hashish to northern Europe while laundering the proceeds through Spain.

Judges found that Broberg had acted as a leader of a network responsible for organising drug shipments, primarily to Sweden.

The ruling concluded that he was ‘stably and permanently’ involved in drug trafficking activities.

However, he was acquitted of membership of a criminal organisation after the court found there was insufficient evidence to prove he belonged continuously to one specific criminal group, instead concluding he had collaborated with members of various networks.

The court also found that Broberg laundered almost €4.8million in criminal proceeds by purchasing homes, other properties, gold and precious stones.

The Anti-Drug Prosecutor’s request will now be considered by the National Court, which must decide whether the risk of flight justifies placing Broberg in provisional custody before the sentence becomes final.

Broberg can still launch an appeal against the conviction to the Supreme Court of Spain.
