A beachgoer suffered a terrifying ordeal after stumbling upon drug traffickers as they were unloading a shipment onto a tourist beach in Almeria.
The incident happened between 6am and 6.15am on Thursday at Las Palmerillas beach in Roquetas de Mar, near the former Carabineros barracks.
The area is popular among British and other foreign tourists, as well as European expats.
According to local newspaper Diario de Almeria, the group of suspected drug traffickers intercepted the member of public to stop them from raising the alarm.
The gang allegedly pointed a rifle and a handgun at the witness, confiscated their mobile phone and forced them to remain behind the old building until the unloading had been completed.
Once the suspected drug shipment had been brought ashore, the group – believed to number between 10 and 15 people – fled the scene on foot.
Police have so far identified two of the suspected porters involved in transporting the shipment inland, while a manhunt remains underway to trace the remaining gang members.
