Health authorities in Andalucia have issued an urgent food safety alert after salmonella was detected in two varieties of chorizo sold across parts of Sevilla and Cadiz.
The Junta has ordered the immediate withdrawal of affected products after traces of Salmonella spp. were found in two products from the La Serrana brand: Chorizo Herradura and Chorizo Rosario.
The alert specifically affects products from batch number OTE:200526, with a best-before date of August 20, 2026.
According to health officials, the products were sold loose rather than pre-packaged, making it particularly important for consumers to check with their local retailer if they are unsure whether they may have purchased the affected batch.
The recall affects establishments in numerous towns and cities across Andalucia.
In Sevilla province, the products were distributed in San Jose de la Rinconada, Alcala de Guadaira, Marchena, Lora del Río, La Puebla de Cazalla, El Cuervo, Lebrija, El Palmar de Troya, Las Cabezas de San Juan, Morón de la Frontera, Sevilla city, Brenes, Los Rosales and Carmona.
In Cadiz province, affected products were sold in Jerez, Alcala de los Gazules, Arcos de la Frontera, Puerto Real, Medina Sidonia, Paterna de Rivera and several other localities.
What should consumers do?
The Junta has urged anyone who has purchased either of the affected products not to consume them under any circumstances.
Instead, customers should return them to the place of purchase.
Authorities say the measure has been taken as a precaution to protect public health and prevent further cases of food poisoning.
Symptoms of salmonella infection
Anyone who has already eaten the affected chorizo and develops symptoms consistent with salmonellosis is being advised to seek medical attention.
Common symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, headaches and stomach cramps.
While most healthy adults recover without complications, salmonella infections can be more serious for elderly people, young children, pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems.
