An Irish man has been found dead next to a seriously injured woman inside a home in Orihuela Costa.

The alarm was raised shortly after 10.15am on Wednesday, when neighbours reported several days of unusual silence around the home, as well as concerning smells coming from the property.

Arriving police officers found the front door partially open, and upon entering discovered the body of a man aged around 50.

Early forensic findings suggest he had suffered a head injury and may have been dead for about a week.

Nearby lay a woman in her 70s, also of Irish nationality, with visible injuries to her torso and limbs.

Unlike initial reports which wrongly suggested she had passed away, medics found her alive and rushed her to Torrevieja University Hospital.

She remains in a serious condition with her prognosis described as reserved.

According to investigators, the deceased man had been caring for the woman on a regular basis.

Both were found semi-naked in the same room. Officers also noted food and drink left out inside the home, located on Avenida Escorpiones, which is a long, busy artery separating the southern edge of Torrevieja from the northern coastline of Orihuela.

For now, investigators lean towards the possibility of a natural death in the man’s case, but emphasise that other scenarios have not been ruled out.

There were no firearms or knives found at the scene, and early indications do not point to a robbery.

The case is being led by the Guardia Civil’s judicial police team based in Torre de la Horadada, who continue to gather evidence and await more detailed forensic analysis.
