A British expat has been met with backlash after declaring she left the UK for Spain because there were ‘too many foreigners.’

Her comments, made in an interview with GB News in Benidorm, have sparked disbelief across social media.

Explaining her decision to relocate, she said: ‘You’ll probably edit it out but there were too many foreigners in the UK.

‘We lost our rights, freedom of speech was gone. I’d had enough – I couldn’t take it anymore.

‘Britain lost the plot 20 years ago, sorry!’

The interview shows her sitting outside a jewellery shop in the old town of Benidorm, where she now lives among an estimated 3,400 fellow Britons – roughly 5% of the local population.

Benidorm remains one of the most popular destinations for UK nationals, with more than 800,000 Britons visiting the eastern Spanish city each year. Many choose to settle permanently.

Her remarks triggered swift criticism online. British TV presenter Alex Taylor posted: ‘Show me a video of a Brit living in Benidorm speaking fluent Spanish and I’ll eat a hat live on X.’

Translator David Head added: ‘She’s a foreigner in Benidorm but complains about too many foreigners in the UK. Minds like this gave us Brexit.’

Another X user jibed: ‘There are too many foreigners in the UK so I’m going to Spain to live among foreigners and enjoy the benefits of a socialist government!’

One Spaniard told the Spanish Eye: ‘It’s just shocking, and so ignorant, I think people like this actually believe what comes out their mouths.’

The woman also used the interview to express frustration with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and her dissatisfaction with the country’s political direction.

Commentators pointed out the irony that Spain is currently governed by a socialist coalition – something the woman appeared unaware of.
