A Guardia Civil officer has tearfully described crawling into an overturned carriage to rescue a young woman from the Toledo train disaster.
The victim, named only as Almudena, was trapped inside carriage eight of the AVE when officers heard her shouting from beneath the wreckage.
In a video shared by the Guardia Civil, the officer recalled how rescuers lay down and crawled into the carriage but initially could not see her.
‘The carriage was overturned and we heard a girl screaming inside,’ he said.
‘After a while we suddenly saw her hand, she had bloody injuries that we had to cover, while removing all the debris around her…
‘She was conscious, she told us her name was Almudena and that she was from Sevilla.’
He added that she was wearing a green bracelet from her local religious brotherhood.
Officers gradually reached her legs and found a heavy obstruction pinning her beneath the wreckage from the other train.
The officer continued: ‘After little more than an hour battling through it with her, she got out, she was the only person we recovered from that carriage alive.’
Afterwards, he said he contacted friends at the hospital, asking whether a young woman named Almudena from Sevilla had arrived and survived.
That afternoon, he received word that a patient matched her description.
He later spoke to her boyfriend Julio, who confirmed her identity and told him she was alive and doing well.
