People from 27 countries are among those killed in the Toledo train disaster, Pedro Sanchez has revealed.
Speaking on Friday, the prime minister said the government was notifying embassies and consulates as victims are identified.
Sanchez acknowledged that public confidence in Spain’s high-speed railway had been damaged and promised measures to strengthen the system.
He said ‘it is not acceptable for a country like Spain’ to suffer two railway disasters of such magnitude in one year, referring to the Urda and Adamuz collisions.
He said the government’s responsibility extended beyond establishing the causes to providing solutions that would prevent another tragedy.
The PSOE leader expressed his condolences to bereaved families and pledged practical, staffing and psychological support for those affected.
He also promised that families would receive reliable information as quickly as possible, with deaths communicated as identification work progresses.
Sanchez praised the solidarity shown by residents of Castilla-La Mancha and the regional government’s emergency response.
