An AVE train travelling from Sevilla to Madrid stopped just 500 metres from the Toledo rail disaster, it has emerged.
Passenger footage shows the Renfe service stationary beneath a road bridge, with a red railway signal ahead and the Iryo train involved in Wednesday’s collision visible in the distance.
The northbound AVE had been travelling towards Madrid on the opposite track to the two trains involved in the crash near Urda.
The collision occurred when a southbound AVE struck a stationary Iryo service from behind.
Carriages derailed down an embankment while other sections of the wreckage encroached onto the neighbouring line.
The Sevilla–Madrid service stopped just before reaching the affected area.
Passenger Ramon Rubio described the proximity of his train to the crash site in a post on X.
‘The Sevilla–Madrid train stopped at the crossing just on the other side of the accident,’ he wrote.
He said passengers had been informed throughout the journey that there were operational problems and that services were running with considerable manual intervention.
