IN NUMBERS: Sevilla’s record-breaking heat in 2025 – and no, it’s not ‘normal’

Never before in the history of Aemet’s records has Sevilla seen such a brutal run. The previous record, set just three years ago in 2022, was 26 days.

Sevilla has broken a new heat record after clocking up 30 days above 40C so far in 2025 – and there’s still a month of summer left.

Never before in the history of Aemet’s records has Sevilla seen such a brutal run. The previous record, set just three years ago in 2022, was 26 days.

This August alone delivered a staggering nine-day streak of 40C+ highs, peaking at 44.9C on Sunday 17th.

Airport readings show the relentless march: 41.7C on the 10th, 43.7C on the 11th, 44.4C on the 12th, 43C on the 13th, and so on. Tablada station was no better, hitting 45.2C at one point.

By the time the mid-August heatwave finally broke, the average temperature for the month stood at 40.7C. For comparison, the historic average is 35.5C.

In June, there were 10 days above 40C, and most of them before the solstice. May even threw in three freak 40C days for good measure.

Between 1961 and 1990, Sevilla averaged just three 40C+ days a year. Between 1985 and 2014, it doubled to six. In 2020, there were 14. This year there are already 30.

Death toll rise

According to Spain’s Ministry of Health monitoring system (MoMo), 14 people died in Sevilla alone during the August 3-18 heatwave, attributed directly to the heat.

And it’s not just the capital. Across the province, Aemet stations in towns like Tomares, Moron de la Frontera, Fuentes de Andalucía, Carrion de los Cespedes, Carmona and Ecija also recorded the same nine-day streak. Tomares hit 45.3C, the highest in the region.
