A missing Irish woman has been found alive and well after a dramatic week-long search involving sniffer dogs.

Merlene Davies, 50, had been missing from her home in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, since at least July 7.

In the initial appeal by Missing Persons Tenerife, it said she was expecting to meet her family at her home in Candelaria, but was nowhere to be found when they arrived.

A spokesperson said the family were ‘extremely worried’ and that the Guardia Civil were ‘taking it very seriously.’

The town of Candelaria is tucked away in the north east of the island, around a 35-minute drive from the popular tourist resort of Los Cristianos.

The appeal said: ‘Her exact departure time is unknown, but she was not there (at home) as expected that evening.

‘Her family has reported this to the police, who are conducting a physical search, including the use of dogs.’

However, in an update on Monday, Missing Persons Tenerife said: ‘Good news, Merlene has returned home and is safe and well.’

A spokesperson told the Spanish Eye they did not have any more information on where Merlene had been or what had happened.
