A driver has been arrested over the fatal hit-and-run of a young Spanish soldier in Sevilla.

The Guardia Civil said on Wednesday that it had located the van believed to have struck Efren Carazo Fernandez, 29, on the morning of August 18.

Efren, who was on his way to work, was changing a punctured tyre on the A-4 motorway in Carmona when he was run over.

Emergency services received a call at around 7am reporting a man lying on the ground next to a stationary vehicle.

The driver allegedly continued on without stopping, prompting the Guardia Civil to launch a manhunt.

According to the force, one of the crucial breakthroughs came from the small amount of debris recovered from the scene.

Specialists analysed the fragments and were able to determine the make and model of the vehicle suspected of being involved.

Investigators then analysed camera footage which eventually led them to identify a suspect and locate the van.

The vehicle had damage consistent with the fatal collision, police said.

The suspected driver has now been arrested and brought before a court on suspicion of negligent homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.

Efren was a serving member of the Spanish Armed Forces and was travelling to his post when he was killed.

Following his death, his colleagues paid an emotional tribute, remembering his ‘perseverance, loyalty and camaraderie’.

They said those qualities had earned him the ‘affection and respect’ of the people who served alongside him.

The Guardia Civil has reiterated that anyone involved in a serious road accident has a duty to stop, remain at the scene and cooperate with emergency services and police.

Under Spanish law, negligent homicide committed using a motor vehicle can result in a prison sentence as well as a driving ban, while deliberately leaving the scene of a serious or fatal accident constitutes a separate criminal offence.
