A woman has described how her car began floating and spinning after floodwater swept her into a motorway tunnel in Alicante during DANA Adam this week.
Nerea was travelling with a friend on the AP-7 in Orihuela when rising water rapidly turned their journey into a fight to escape.
‘There was a little water, but within 30 seconds the current swept us away. There was nothing we could do,’ she told Telecinco.
Their vehicle became trapped inside a tunnel where the water reportedly reached around 1.5 metres deep.
‘I tried to open the door with all my strength, but it wouldn’t budge. The car was spinning because it was floating,’ she recalled.
‘I was really scared. I feared I wouldn’t get out of there.’
Nerea managed to escape and climb onto the bonnet, while her friend had to get out through a window because the water pressure had blocked the doors.
‘I don’t even know how I climbed onto the bonnet,’ she said.
The pair then had to move between vehicles to reach safety.
Nerea described shouting for help from the roof of her car until several young people came to their aid.
‘I was screaming for someone to help me, please. They got out of their car and helped us jump across,’ she said.
Firefighters arrived around 10 minutes later and began working to remove the water that had accumulated inside the tunnel.
The incident occurred as torrential rain from DANA Adam caused flooding across parts of the Valencia region.
