Almeria has become the latest province to be rocked by a shooting in Andalucia this week.

A 20-year-old Moroccan national was arrested on Tuesday night after allegedly shooting another man in the leg in El Ejido.

Emergency services received several calls at around 10.35pm reporting gunshots in El Palmeral park in Balerma.

Local Police and the Guardia Civil were dispatched to Calle Rafael Alberti, where officers discovered a person suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.

The victim was taken to a medical centre for treatment and is not reported to be in a critical condition.

At around 2am, officers located three people on Balerma’s seafront.

One of the men attempted to flee after noticing the police presence, but officers caught up with him.

Police identified the suspect as B.H., a 20-year-old Moroccan national.

During his arrest, officers discovered a firearm among his belongings which investigators believe was used in the earlier shooting.

The weapon was described as a 9mm handgun with its serial number erased. Police also recovered a magazine and a cartridge.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury and illegal possession of a firearm and taken into police custody.

El Ejido mayor Julia Ibáñez and the leadership of the Local Police praised what they described as the ‘rapid and forceful’ response of the officers involved.

They also highlighted the force’s permanent presence along the municipality’s coastal areas and other population centres as part of efforts to tackle crime.

The incident comes just days after a 33-year-old man was gunned down in Marbella.

The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene after being discovered laying in the middle of the road in the centre of the Costa del Sol town.
