Four people critically injured in the Almeria wildfire are fighting for their lives in one of Spain’s top specialist burns units.

The patients are being cared for at the Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Sevilla, after being transferred from the Torrecardenas hospital in Almeria.

The Andalucian Health Service (SAS) has not released any medical updates on their condition and authorities continue to exercise caution over their prognosis.

Officially, eight people were injured in the wildfire, with four remaining in a critical condition.

The other four suffered less serious injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation, although no further information has been released on their recovery or whether any have since been discharged.

The identities of those receiving treatment have also not been officially disclosed.

The Spanish Eye understands that at least one of the critically injured patients is a British woman, whose family and friends are aware that she is being treated at the specialist burns unit in Sevilla.

The hospital is the regional referral centre for patients with severe burn injuries and has been treating the victims since they were airlifted from Almeria following Thursday’s fire.

Meanwhile, authorities continue the painstaking process of identifying the 12 people who lost their lives.

DNA profiles have now been obtained from all of the victims, but formal identifications are still pending as investigators await samples from relatives, many of whom are travelling to Spain from abroad.

Emergency services also remain on the ground in Almeria, where firefighters are monitoring hotspots and working to prevent the fire from reigniting as the operation enters its fourth day.
