Pedro Sanchez has vowed to win another term in office despite mounting pressure over corruption scandals that have engulfed his Socialist Party (PSOE).
Speaking at the PSOE’s Federal Committee meeting on Saturday, the incumbent prime minister dismissed suggestions that his political project had run its course.
”Is the project exhausted?’ If you ask me, I say: ‘I can’t wait to win again in 2027,” he told party members.
The PM argued that Spain is in a stronger position than it was when he first came to power.
‘It is clear and evident that Spain today is much better than it was in 2023, and not to mention 2018,’ Sanchez said.
‘I believe we have every chance of winning another parliamentary majority.’
The remarks come as Sanchez faces one of the most difficult periods of his premiership, with corruption allegations involving figures linked to the PSOE dominating headlines in recent weeks.
Saturday’s meeting reportedly featured criticism from some Socialist leaders, most notably Emiliano Garcia-Page, the president of Castilla-La Mancha.
According to Cadena Ser, Garcia-Page has spent months urging Sanchez to call an early general election, warning that the ongoing scandals could damage the electoral prospects of Socialist mayors and regional candidates.
Despite those concerns, Sanchez made clear he has no intention of stepping aside or bringing elections forward.
Spain’s next general election is currently scheduled to take place in 2027.
