A gender violence crisis committee will be held in Andalucia next month following a ‘concerning’ spate of femicides, it has emerged.

The emergency meeting will be held by the Ministry of Equality in September.

Andalucia has recorded 10 confirmed gender violence killings so far in 2026, already matching the total for the whole of 2024.

The meeting was announced before the murder of a trans woman in San Pedro de Alcantara, Marbella, on Tuesday morning.

Last year, 15 women were killed in gender violence cases in the region.

The 10 deaths recorded so far this year represent 27.8% of Spain’s national total, around 10 percentage points higher than Andalucia’s share of the country’s population.

The figures are even more stark in Malaga province, which accounts for 60% of Andalucia’s gender violence deaths this year, despite having a much smaller share of the region’s population.

Among those is British expat and mother-of-three Victoria Hart, who was stabbed to death in her home in Alhaurin el Grande at the start of the year.

Since official records began in 2003, 291 women have been killed in gender violence cases in Andalucia.

Ministry ‘concerned’ about Andalucia

The Ministry of Equality said the decision to hold the committee in Andalucia was intended to bring the government’s crisis response directly to areas worst affected.

Equality Minister Ana Redondo said officials were concerned about the latest figures and called for a coordinated response from authorities.

‘We are concerned about the figures in Andalucia,’ she said.

‘It is essential to work in coordination and to have unanimous rejection [of gender violence], which is why we believe it is necessary to hold the next crisis committee there.’

Redondo also criticised what she described as the possible ‘dismantling of support for victims in the hands of the far right’, amid a political row over gender violence responsibilities involving Vox in Andalucia.

The ministry is also seeking to arrange a meeting with Junta president Juanma Moreno to discuss the situation.

Six latest killings to be examined

The September meeting will be the seventh crisis committee held this year.

Officials will examine the circumstances surrounding the six most recently confirmed gender violence killings, with individual cases analysed to identify potential failures and possible improvements to prevention and victim protection.

The committees bring together representatives from government departments including Equality, Health and Interior, alongside prosecutors, the judiciary, police forces and Spain’s autonomous communities.

The previous meeting was held on July 28 and examined killings recorded during June and July.

Across Spain, 36 women have been killed by partners or former partners so far in 2026, according to the figures cited by the ministry.

That brings the total to 1,377 women since records began in 2003.

A further 26 children have been orphaned by gender violence so far this year, with 536 minors losing their mothers to such killings since records for that statistic began in 2013.
