Conil de la Frontera is one of the best places in Andalucia to experience traditional Spanish cuisine, according to local newspaper La Voz de Cadiz.
While the coastal town is best known for its golden beaches, dramatic sunsets and laid-back atmosphere, it has also built a reputation as one of the province’s top food destinations.
Located in the La Janda comarca, Conil attracts thousands of visitors throughout the year, not just during the summer season.
Many come for its famous beaches, including Los Bateles, Castilnovo and El Palmar, but increasingly it is the town’s gastronomy that is drawing attention.
In 2024, Conil was awarded the title of Spain’s Gastronomic City, recognising the quality and variety of its culinary offering.
A taste of Cadiz
From grilled meats and rice dishes to fresh seafood and traditional fried fish, Conil’s restaurants, bars and beachside chiringuitos showcase some of the best produce from the Cadiz coast.

Among the standout local specialities is Retinto beef, which comes from a native cattle breed raised in open pastures.
The meat is highly prized for its flavour and quality, and every winter local restaurants take part in the Ruta del Retinto, serving special dishes and tapas centred around the product.
Another star of the local menu is almadraba bluefin tuna.
The famous Almadraba tuna
Each spring, bluefin tuna migrate from the Atlantic into the Mediterranean, passing the Cadiz coastline where they are caught using the centuries-old almadraba fishing method.

The arrival of the tuna season is celebrated in Conil with the Ruta Gastronomica del Atun, a month-long event during which around 30 restaurants create special menus showcasing wild almadraba bluefin tuna.
From tuna tartare and grilled fillets to traditional stews and modern interpretations, the event has become one of the highlights of the local food calendar.
Combined with its beaches, historic centre and year-round sunshine, it’s easy to see why Conil de la Frontera has become one of Cadiz’s most popular destinations for food lovers.
