The body of a 29-year-old man has been found inside a rubbish container in Jerez.

The grim discovery was made on Calle Sevilla at around 8.30am on Friday.

Waste collection workers raised the alarm after finding the corpse while handling the container next to a bus stop.

Forensic investigators were dispatched to the scene to identify the victim and gather evidence.

It is currently believed that victim, reported to be homeless, climbed into the container voluntarily before suffocating to death.

Earlier reports said the man had been seen wandering around the area at around 5am, several hours before his body was discovered.

Witnesses reportedly saw him bathing in the fountain at Plaza del Mamelon before walking through the streets without a shirt and appearing heavily intoxicated or otherwise impaired.

It is believed he may have climbed into the container, located close to a Domino’s Pizza restaurant, while searching for food.

The body has now been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

The autopsy will establish the official cause of death.
