Hundreds of pensioners in Mijas are set to enjoy a heavily subsidised getaway to the Cadiz coast this autumn as the town hall prepares a major holiday programme for older residents.
Mijas Council has launched a public tender for the organisation of the scheme, which will allow up to 1,600 seniors to enjoy nearly two weeks away in four-star hotels between September and October 2026.
The initiative forms part of the municipality’s active ageing programme and is aimed at encouraging social interaction, leisure and wellbeing among older residents.
According to the proposal, the holidays will last 13 days and 12 nights, with participants divided into four separate groups of 400 people.
The trips are scheduled to take place between September 15 and October 30.
Participants will stay in at least four-star accommodation on a full-board basis in shared double rooms with private bathrooms.
The council has also stipulated that hotels must include adapted rooms for guests with reduced mobility and provide facilities expected of high-category establishments, including a large events hall capable of holding 400 people.
But the programme will not simply involve relaxing by the coast.
The winning company will also have to organise a full itinerary featuring three cultural and leisure excursions.
Two of those outings have already been confirmed: trips to Chipiona and Jerez.
The third excursion will be proposed by the successful bidder and could include visits to museums, wineries, monuments, parks or live shows.
All transport will be carried out using coaches equipped for the needs of older passengers.
The total budget for the programme stands at €768,627.20.
The initiative is the latest in a series of activities organised by Mijas Council for senior residents and comes as many municipalities across Andalucia continue expanding programmes aimed at promoting active and social lifestyles among older generations.
