Bullfighter Morante de la Puebla is already planning his return to the ring just days after suffering a serious and potentially career-threatening injury in Sevilla.
The matador was gored on April 20 at La Maestranza, sustaining a deep wound near the anal area with a trajectory of around 10cm.
The injury partially damaged the sphincter muscles and caused a perforation in the rectum.
He underwent emergency surgery in the bullring’s infirmary before spending nearly four days recovering at the Viamed hospital in Sevilla. He was discharged last Friday.
‘Fantastic recovery’ and return in sight
Despite the severity of the injury, Morante’s recovery has progressed faster than expected.
According to bullfighting journalist Jesus Bayort, the matador is now dividing his time between his home in La Puebla del Rio and a recently acquired estate in Huelva, where he has already resumed light activity.
‘The recovery is fantastic and he will begin training this week,’ Bayort said.
Back in the ring within days?
The speed of his recovery has raised the possibility of a remarkably quick return.
Morante is reportedly determined not to cancel any of his scheduled appearances and could be back as soon as May 10 in Valladolid.
He is also said to be especially motivated to appear at the upcoming Jerez Horse Fair, where a large sculpture will be unveiled in honour of his mentor, Rafael de Paula.
Later in the summer, he is scheduled to perform on two separate occasions in Marbella – after selling out the Plaza de Toros bullring last year.
Defying expectations again
The comeback would be another example of the resilience often associated with bullfighters, with Morante once again pushing the limits of recovery after a serious goring.
Many had feared the injury would rule him out for weeks or longer. Instead, he now appears on track for a return in a matter of days.
