An American tourist who was found floating in the swimming pool of a Malaga holiday rental died from drowning, an autopsy has confirmed.

The tragedy occurred on Monday in the El Palo area of the city, where the 45-year-old was enjoying a holiday.

Investigators also found no evidence to suggest that anyone else was involved in his death.

The alarm was raised shortly before 1pm when a caller contacted the 112 emergency service after finding a person unconscious in the swimming pool.

Police and paramedics were dispatched to the property, but emergency workers were unable to save the holidaymaker.

Police said from the outset that there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

The results of the subsequent autopsy have now established that the cause of death was submersion, or drowning.

Investigations carried out so far have also uncovered no evidence pointing to the involvement of a third party.

The death occurred on a day when Malaga was under a weather warning due to extreme temperatures.

However, authorities have not established any link between the intense heat and the man’s death.

The investigation therefore currently points to the American having drowned in the swimming pool, with no evidence at this stage that another person was involved.
