A private hospital on the Costa del Sol has launched a new plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery unit.

Hospiten Estepona said its new specialist department will be headed by plastic surgeon Dr Roberto Asenjo Medina.

The hospital said the expansion responds to increasing demand for plastic and cosmetic procedures, with patients increasingly seeking subtle, natural and proportionate results rather than dramatic transformations.

Among the procedures highlighted by the new unit is mastopexy, commonly known as a breast lift.

The operation is used to reposition and reshape breasts that have lost firmness or changed position, something that can occur following pregnancy and breastfeeding, significant weight loss or ageing.

It can also be performed following the removal of breast implants.

Dr Asenjo said the procedure involves repositioning the breast tissue and nipple-areola complex to achieve a higher and more harmonious position while maintaining proportions appropriate to the patient’s anatomy.

He said attitudes towards cosmetic surgery were changing, with many women now looking to restore their natural shape rather than pursue radical changes.

Growing demand for implant removal

Hospiten said it has also observed increasing interest in breast implant removal and procedures that allow patients to return to a more natural appearance.

Following implant removal, a breast lift can be used to reshape the breast using the patient’s own tissue and remove excess skin without inserting replacement implants.

Breast reduction surgery is another area attracting increased interest.

In some cases, the motivation is not purely cosmetic. Excessively large breasts can contribute to back, neck and shoulder pain and make everyday activities and exercise more difficult, according to the hospital.

Dr Asenjo said each patient should undergo an individual assessment because anatomy, requirements and expectations vary significantly.

He added that appropriate surgical recommendations, transparent information and realistic expectations were fundamental to achieving satisfactory outcomes.

The new Estepona unit will offer considerably more than breast surgery.

Hospiten lists procedures including liposuction, abdominoplasty or tummy tucks, body contouring, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery and facial rejuvenation, alongside reconstructive procedures.

Dr Asenjo’s specialist areas include reconstructive microsurgery of the breast and lower limbs, hand surgery and reconstruction following cancer treatment or trauma.

Hospiten said the new service would combine aesthetic and reconstructive treatments with an emphasis on individualised planning, safety and natural-looking results.
