Andalucia may be famous for its beaches, but two unlikely beauty spots hundreds of kilometres from the coast have just earned prestigious blue flags for their crystal-clear waters and bathing facilities.
Despite having no coastline whatsoever, the provinces of Cordoba and Jaen are now officially home to two of Andalucia’s recognised ‘blue flag beaches’.
The inland bathing areas awarded the coveted distinction are La Breña, in Almodovar del Rio (Cordoba), and El Encinarejo, in Andujar (Jaen).
The blue flag programme recognises bathing areas that meet strict standards on water quality, safety, environmental management and facilities.
While the award is typically associated with Andalucia’s packed Mediterranean and Atlantic coastline, these two inland locations prove there are alternatives for those hoping to cool off away from the crowded costas this summer.

La Breña sits beside the vast Breña reservoir near the picturesque Cordoba town of Almodovar del Río, famous for its towering medieval castle.
The freshwater beach has become increasingly popular with families looking for a quieter and more nature-focused escape during the scorching summer months.
Meanwhile, El Encinarejo, located near Andujar Natural Park in Jaen province, offers visitors swimming areas surrounded by woodland and rolling countryside rather than apartment blocks and beach bars.
Both spots have grown in popularity in recent years as inland tourism continues to boom across Andalucía, particularly among travellers seeking cooler rural getaways and outdoor activities.
The awards also highlight the growing appeal of ‘playas de interior’ – inland beaches created around reservoirs, lakes and river areas – which are increasingly being promoted as sustainable alternatives to overcrowded coastal resorts.
For many Andalucian residents facing another intense summer of soaring temperatures, they may also provide the perfect excuse to swap the packed Costa del Sol for something a little more peaceful.
