A Moroccan man has been jailed after sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl in Almeria before threatening to kill her and her mother.
The attack took place inside a residential care centre run by an NGO in Roquetas de Mar at around 3pm on October 14, 2024.
According to Almeria’s Provincial Court, both the defendant and the victim were living inside the centre at the time of the attack.
The court found that the man followed the girl into the lift, entering behind her.
Once they were alone, he grabbed her face, covered her mouth to stop her screaming and sexually assaulted her by touching her buttocks and genitals over her clothing while preventing her from escaping.
Before the girl managed to leave the lift, the man threatened to kill both her and her mother if she told anyone what had happened.
The victim later confided in her mother following an unrelated confrontation between the woman and the defendant, leading to a complaint being filed with the Guardia Civil.
The court convicted the man of sexual assault against a child under the age of 16 involving violence or intimidation, sentencing him to six years in prison.
He received a further seven months for making criminal threats.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered six years of supervised release following his release from custody, banned him from working in any profession involving contact with children for 15 years, and prohibited him from coming within 500 metres of the victim or contacting her for six years.
He was also ordered to pay the girl €6,000 in compensation.
