A Finnish man has died after setting himself on fire in Granada province.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday in Orgiva, a town known to be a favourite for ‘hippies’ or ‘alternative living’ communities.
According to Orgiva’s mayor, Raul Orellana, the man had been living in the municipality for around three weeks and was sleeping rough.
His body was discovered later that morning inside a bathtub on a privately owned plot of land that he is believed to have entered without permission.
Local reports indicate he had used alcohol before setting himself alight.
The mayor said the man had previously come to the attention of health and social services after earlier episodes in which he had harmed himself, and was believed to have been living with mental health difficulties.
The body has been taken for an autopsy.
Orgiva Town Hall is now working with the Finnish consular authorities to locate the man’s relatives so his body can be repatriated to Finland.
