A woman has died after falling around 200 metres while climbing in the mountains of Granada.
It is the second fatal hiking accident in the province in less than 24 hours.
Emergency services were alerted at around 10.45am on Saturday after a caller reported that a climber had suffered a serious fall in the central gully of the north face of Mulhacen, Spain’s highest peak on the mainland.
The 112 control centre immediately dispatched paramedics and the Guardia Civil, including the specialist mountain rescue unit (GREIM), which was deployed by helicopter due to the extremely difficult terrain.
Despite the rapid response, officers later confirmed that the woman had died at the scene.
No further details have been released about the circumstances of the fall.
The tragedy comes just a day after another fatal incident in the same province, when a man died after falling into a river along the popular Vereda de la Estrella hiking route on Friday.
Two deadly accidents in such a short space of time have highlighted the risks involved in mountain activities in the Sierra Nevada, particularly in remote and hard-to-access areas.
