An 87-year-old man living on the streets of Marbella has sparked outrage and compassion among locals after his situation was shared online.
The case was highlighted by citizen platform Marbella se queja, which says efforts are now underway to help him find a place to live.
‘This is a situation that really affected me,’ the group said. ‘He’s an honest man who has worked all his life and does not deserve to be on the street.
‘He’s not begging – he has a pension – but he needs a chance. A small apartment where he can live in peace.’
The man is reportedly often seen near a Santander bank on Calle Padre Francisco Echamendi.
Despite his situation, those who have spoken to him describe him as polite, well-presented and reserved.
One local, Fernando, said he met him at a cashpoint and was struck by his dignity.
‘He doesn’t ask for anything. He’s well dressed and very respectful. The only thing that gave it away was a Red Cross cushion he was carrying. I asked if he needed help, it broke my heart.’

Since the story emerged, social media has been flooded with messages of support and frustration.
‘This should be shown to politicians,’ wrote one resident. Others questioned how an elderly person could end up sleeping rough in Spain.
Some have even stepped forward with offers of help. One woman, Stella, said she would be willing to take him into her home in Granada while a more permanent solution is found.
‘He would have a roof and family warmth here,’ she said. ‘I could come and pick him up on Monday if needed.’
The case has reignited debate about how vulnerable elderly people are being supported, with many asking how someone with a pension can still fall through the cracks.
For now, locals are hoping the attention will lead to a quick solution and that the man can soon swap the street for a safe place to call home.
