Drivers across Andalucia are being warned to ease off the accelerator this week as the traffic authority (DGT) rolls out a major speed enforcement campaign on roads across the region.
The operation, which runs until April 19, will see an increased police presence on motorways, secondary roads and urban routes, with officers stepping up checks to catch speeding drivers.
Traffic units from the Guardia Civil will lead the operation in a ‘coordinated push’ to tackle one of the most dangerous factors behind fatal crashes.
Excessive or inappropriate speed remains one of the biggest causes of deadly accidents in Spain.
It was a contributing factor in 291 fatal crashes in 2023 – a figure that rose to 307 in 2024 – and is linked to around 30% of all road deaths.
Officials stress that it’s not just about breaking speed limits. Driving too fast for road conditions – whether due to weather, traffic or visibility – is equally dangerous.
During a similar operation in Andalucía in August 2025, more than 275,000 vehicles were checked and over 30,000 drivers were fined for speeding, representing nearly 11% of those stopped.
Most offences were recorded on major roads, with almost 63% taking place on motorways and dual carriageways.
Drivers can expect more roadside checks, mobile radar units and surveillance in both urban and rural settings.
