A 13-year-old boy has died after a fountain collapsed during World Cup victory celebrations in Spain.

The tragedy occurred shortly after 12.30am on Monday in Ciudad Rodrigo, Salamanca, where crowds had gathered around the well-known Fuente del Arbol Gordo (Fountain of the Fat Tree).

The structure suddenly gave way and collapsed onto people surrounding it as supporters celebrated their country’s win.

Emergency services were alerted and the Castilla y Leon 112 coordination centre dispatched Local Police, Guardia Civil officers, provincial firefighters and paramedics to the scene.

Two injured people were taken to a local health centre, where the death of the 13-year-old was confirmed.

A second person suffered a fractured leg in the same incident.

The local authorities called in psychologists to support the boy’s family.

An investigation is expected to establish why the fountain collapsed and whether the weight of people gathered around it contributed to the failure.
